The Monumental bullring of Barcelona celebrates one hundred years old, and two of inactivity. The Monumental is the only one left of the three that there were in the city, since Las Arenas is now a shopping center with taurine facade. On April the 12th of 1914, a square named Sport was inaugurated, and two years later it changed its name to ‘Monumental’. It happened after the barrage was extended. And with those iconic towers topped with Neo-Mudejar domes, which are adorned with white and blue mosaics.
The Catalan Parliament passed in 2010 the bullfighting ban, which took effect in January 2012. So now there are only three people there. The box-office clerk that receives and charged the few onlookers, mostly tourists, who want to see the bullring and visit the museum (EUR 6), the shop assistant of the souvenirs’ shop and who serves in the museum. An ideal place to take pictures which, like Las Arenas, no longer fulfills its function.
